A Week in Web Design and Animation: A Student Placement

Hello, I’m Rory, an S5 student at Prestwick Academy, and I’ve just completed a week-long placement with Adworks, focusing on Web Design and Animation.

Over the course of the week, I worked closely with the design team at Adworks to learn about the world of graphic design. I learnt about Web Design basics, Graphic Design tools, Website Planning and Layouts, as well as Animation with Adobe After Effects.

Here’s what my week at Adworks looked like:

Monday
I started the week working with Daniel learning about the basics of web design. I also took a look at a new website the team will have live in the new year to see the building process and all the things that are needed to upgrade an existing website.

Tuesday
I was introduced to WordPress and was able to build my own website. I customised layouts, added text and images, and even experimented with some CSS coding to create the style of the website.

Wednesday
Midweek, I started using a programme called Figma which I used to create wireframes and mock-ups for a client of my choosing, allowing me to have total creative freedom.

Thursday
Working with Eilidh, I got to look at Adobe After Effects to learn animation techniques. We worked together on a live project, creating an animation for a client based on storyboards Eilidh had previously designed.

Friday
To end the week I was asked to create my own animation based on a client of my choosing. I created a short animation, using the skills I had previously learnt with Eilidh.

I really enjoyed my week at Adworks especially getting to create my own website and animation, getting to play around with the different software. Big thanks to the Adworks team for having me!
